The ONCE coupon for Saturday, February 11th, features the 50th Anniversary of the National Festival of Botillo Exaltation, celebrated in Bembibre on that date. Five and a half million coupons will spread awareness of this event in the Bierzo region, declared a National Tourist Interest Festival.
The Mayor of Bembibre, Silvia Cao, and the Territorial Delegate of ONCE in Castilla y León, Ismael Pérez, presented this coupon in an event held at the Bembibre Town Hall. They were accompanied by the director of ONCE in León, Alejandra Rodríguez, and Belén Martín, councilor responsible for the event.
The National Festival of Botillo Exaltation is one of the most significant gastronomic events in northwestern Spain. It takes place every year since 1973 to highlight the connection of the population with its most characteristic sausage.
Botillo is a meat product typical of the Bierzo region, whose main ingredients are pork ribs and tail. It can also include the pig’s tongue, cheeks, shoulder blade, and backbone, but never exceeding 20% of the total volume. Botillo is a kind of embutido (cold meat) normally consumed in the winter season for its high amount of calories.
It holds the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status that certifies its quality and production within a specific area, coinciding with the municipal terms of the Bierzo region.
The National Festival of Botillo Exaltation in Bembibre preserves and promotes popular culture by celebrating this delicacy, becoming one of the most important gastronomic events in northwestern Spain. The event brings together nearly two thousand people in this edition.
The Festival consists of two parts: on one hand, there’s the institutional and cultural ceremony, including speeches by the Councilor of Culture, the Mayor of the municipality, and the maintainer, followed by a musical performance. On the other hand, there’s the tasting of the sausage in a grand gala dinner.
The ONCE Weekend Jackpot offers a main prize of 300,000 euros for five digits and a series, plus 5,000 euros per month for 20 consecutive years to a single coupon. And there are prizes of 2,000 euros per month for 10 consecutive years for four other coupons.
